Q: What is a gifted magnet program?
A: Pine View is a gifted magnet program in which all students who are enrolled have met eligibility to be identified as Gifted in the state of Florida. Furthermore, they have met additional criteria set by Sarasota County to be able to attend a Gifted Magnet Program. Students at Pine View receive instruction in their classrooms with all gifted students taught by a teacher qualified to work with gifted students. Instruction at Pine View focuses on an accelerated curriculum, offering opportunities for advanced rigor and depth of knowledge, while also supporting the social and emotional needs of gifted learners.

Q: What are the residency restrictions for admissions at Pine View?
A: Students must have an established residency in the state of Florida to be considered for Sarasota County Gifted Magnet Programs, of which Pine View is one option. Students residing in Florida, but outside of Sarasota County, are not guaranteed an admissions spot at Pine View, as those spots will be filled with Sarasota County residents first. Gifted Eligibility and Magnet Program Entry cannot be determined for students who do not have proof of Florida residency.
Q: How do I know if my child has met gifted magnet criteria to attend Pine View?
A: Sarasota County Residents: You will work with the Exceptional Student Education (ESE) Liaison at the Sarasota County public school or charter school that your child attends or your address is districted to. Florida Residents outside of Sarasota County: You will submit your complete application packet directly to Pine View School by mail. You will need to submit the Gifted Magnet Application form with your packet. The form is available on the Sarasota County Schools website referenced above. *Please note: Out of County residents attending a Sarasota County public school will work with the ESE Liaison at that school. Out of County residents attending a private school in Sarasota County will work with the ESE Liaison at the Sarasota County public school located closest to the private school.
Q: How do I enroll in Pine View School?
A: Once your student has met the entry criteria for Gifted Magnet Program entry, you have selected Pine View as the gifted option, and the complete packet is received by Pine View, you will be contacted by Pine View regarding registration for the upcoming school year.
Q: Once a student meets the entry requirements for the Gifted Magnet Program, are there requirements to stay in the Gifted Magnet Program?
A: Yes. A student must continue to demonstrate a need* for accelerated curriculum to remain enrolled in a gifted magnet program. Continuing criteria is described by the county, on the website linked above.
Q. Is it possible for my child to shadow a Pine View student for the day?
A. Instructional time is highly valued and carefully protected. Due to liability and instructional disruptions, shadowing cannot be accommodated.
Q: Is it possible to arrange a tour of the school?
A: Tours are currently pending due to guidelines related to Covid-19.
Academic Requirements for Sarasota County Gifted Magnet Programs and Re-Entry:
Continued Participation – Student must continue to demonstrate a need* for an accelerated curriculum to remain enrolled in a gifted magnet program.
Re-Entry to a Gifted Magnet Site – Student must demonstrate a need* for an accelerated curriculum. Student may return on the first day of school in August of any given school year for which the student meets criteria and county deadline dates for re-admission.
Entry after a delay (greater than a year after initially meeting the magnet entry criteria) – Student must demonstrate a need* for an accelerated curriculum. Student may enter on the first day of school in August of any given school year for which the student meets criteria and county deadline dates for admission.
*Demonstrating a Need:
The student demonstrates a need for a gifted accelerated curriculum by showing consistent above grade level performance across the core curriculum.
Criteria to be considered:
- Unweighted GPA of 2.5 or higher as determined by the three most recent grading periods
- For Re-Entry to a Magnet site OR Entry after a delay: Unweighted GPA of 3.0 or higher as determined by the three most recent grading periods
- GPA based on the following:
o Gr. 2 & 3 – ELA, math
o Gr. 4 & 5 – ELA, math, science, social studies
o Gr. 6-8 – ELA, math, science, social studies, foreign language (for HS credit only)
o Gr. 9-12 – ELA, math, science, social studies, foreign language - Most recent state testing level 4 or above in reading and math (or scores at the 90%ile on other reading and math norm-referenced group achievement tests)
